Updating Our Language - Day 14

“Eenie Meenie Miney Mo”

The old children’s rhyme. We now say “Eenie, meenie, miney, mo, catch a tiger by the toe, if he hollars let him go, eenie, meenie, miney, mo.”

But the word used was not always tiger. It’s commonly known the word used to be the n word.

We believe replacing a word isn’t enough when you remember the original rhyme. It’s best to retire it completely.

Throughout July we will be making posts about updating our language.

We live in a society that has normalized using many words and phrases with racist origins.

Part of the anti-racist work involves acknowledging you have used them, beginning the process of eliminating them from your vocabulary, and gently correcting others when you hear them used.
