Updating Our Language - Day 4

“Gyp” or “Gip”

This word likely evolved as a shortened version of "gypsy" — more correctly known as the Romani, an ethnic group now mostly in Europe and America. The Romani typically traveled a lot and made their money by selling goods. Business disputes naturally arose, and the masses started thinking of Romani as swindlers.

Today, “gyp” has become synonymous with cheating someone.

Throughout July we will be making posts about updating our language.

We live in a society that has normalized using many words and phrases with racist origins.

Part of the anti-racist work involves acknowledging you have used them, beginning the process of eliminating them from your vocabulary, and gently correcting others when you hear them used.
