Updating Our Language - Day 5

“Lynch mob” or “Lynching”

This one should be obvious, as the racism is hidden in plain sight, but it’s still widely used today. It has evolved into being used for“unjust attacks”, but the origins go back to groups of mostly white people who would torture, kill, hang Black people as a form of “justice”.

A good example of this one is when Former President Donald Trump last October called his impeachment inquiry a "lynching”.

Throughout July we will be making posts about updating our language.

We live in a society that has normalized using many words and phrases with racist origins.

Part of the anti-racist work involves acknowledging you have used them, beginning the process of eliminating them from your vocabulary, and gently correcting others when you hear them used.
