Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord was the first person from the Navajo tribe to be board certified in surgery. Growing up in a poor area, she never dreamed she could be intelligent enough to become a doctor, but after meeting another Indigenous surgeon she was inspired and saw the goal as a reality and fell in love with surgery while working with him. She was accepted to Stanford Medical School and went on to train at Stanford University Hospital for her surgery residency.

Something really special about her work as a surgeon was how she was able to specifically assist with Navajo traditions while providing medical care. She would schedule operations so that patients could do ceremonies before or after, allowed prayers, smudging, chants, etc. And provided a place where it was routine for patients to bring a sacred object for comfort or protection.

This is why it is so vital for diversity across the board. This woman was able to provide Navajo patients the very best care while still holding respect for traditions and values.

If you are interested in learning more about her she has a memoir called “The Scalpel and the Silver Bear”.
