American History, Unfiltered: Frederick McKinley Jones

American History, Unfiltered: A post series highlighting people from traditionally marginalized groups who accomplished great things for America.

When we think about our country, the people most known and celebrated for their accomplishments are almost always white men. Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin. We should recognize these great men and what they accomplished for our country, but also make sure to recognize others who are not referenced as much and accomplished amazing things as well.

In this series, we will be highlighting some of the lesser known famous people who we believe deserve some credit and recognition for helping our country.

Frederick McKinley Jones is best known for inventing the first successful mobile refrigeration system, his role in the founding of Thermo King, the mobile refrigeration system still used today. Before his work, we were still using ice and salt to preserve food for transport.

He was a winner of the National Medal of Technology and an inductee of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and he received 61 patents, 40 of them for refrigeration technology.

Next time you see a delivery of cold food at your local grocery store, now you will know who made those long distance deliveries of food possible; Frederick McKinley Jones.
