Alphabet of discrimination: Letter F--Female Reproductive Rights

 


One day, a member of our community asked a member of Equity Buckfield “What’s happening in our country right now that’s so bad? Give me one example.” Our member thought to themself, “I could probably think of something for every letter of the alphabet.” And so they did.

Racial disparities in healthcare are rampant in the United States. Unsurprisingly, the often-contested issue of reproductive rights is severely affected by both structural and individual racism. Black individuals seeking reproductive healthcare experience disproportionate difficulties accessing and using contraception and screening procedures, and worse overall health outcomes (source). 

In the US in 2020, Black women faced three times the maternal mortality rate of white women:
