The Abenaki: Where are they today?
This post is the second in a series originally posted on our Facebook page in October 2021.
The Abenaki people, whose ancestral land we now live on, are still here today. They are not in Maine and are not a federally-recognized tribe in the United States (but are still trying to be). So, where are they?Today, the Abenaki live mostly in Canada and Vermont. They are a federally recognized tribe in Canada and have two reservations in Quebec, at Odanak and Wôlinak. While the United States has not federally recognized the Abenaki, the state of Vermont has recognized four bands: the Elnu Tribe of the Abenaki; the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation; Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi; and the Koasek Traditional Band of the Koos Abenaki Nation.
