Whose land do we live on here in Buckfield?

This post is the first in a series originally posted on our Facebook page in October 2021.

In this series, we want to familiarize you with the people whose land we live on. We’ve previously shared some information about Maine’s four federally recognized tribes (can you name them?), but which of them lived right here, where you might be sitting right now?

None of the above, actually.

Our home sits on the ancestral lands of the Arosaguntacook band of the Abenaki. Together with the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy (here and here), Mi'kmaq, and Maliseet tribes, the Abenaki are part of the Wabanaki Confederacy.

“Abenaki” means “People of the dawn land” and is pronounced “a·buh·NAA·kee” in American English.
Where are the Abenaki now? What should we know about their culture? When were they last living right here? Stay tuned as we learn together.
